Wheat bran is the substrate, or bedding, used to store and feed mealworms and other live insects. Wheat bran is the food of choice for mealworms, super worms, and other feeder insects, as it contains all the nutrition they need to thrive and grow big and healthy. Use wheat bran to gut-load your mealworms a day or two before you feed your pet.

When you order a batch of mealworms, we always include a small amount of wheat bran to tide them over until they arrive at their destination. But if you plan to keep your mealworms for a longer period of time, it is always recommended to add more wheat bran to their container to keep them alive and fed. Mealworms also require a source of moisture, which they can get from a slice of carrot once a week.

For longer-term storing of mealworms, we recommend keeping them in the refrigerator at 45-50°F. Refrigeration causes mealworms to go into dormancy for up to 10 weeks.

Once a week, remove the mealworms from your fridge and add some wheat bran to their container. Keep them at room temperature for 24 hours to allow them time to wake up and eat.

When storing for longer periods, and especially when kept in the fridge, mealworms and other insects tend to lose some of their nutritional value. Gut-loading your insects 1-2 days prior to feeding to your pet is always recommended in order to provide optimal nutrition.

"Gut-loading" is the term used to describe feeding insects a nutrient-rich diet before they are offered as food to pets. This ensures your pet is getting the most out of their meal.
